My best buddy, Dylan, tapped me on the shoulder.
“Hey, Luke, I saw another one,” he whispered.
“Where?” I asked.
“Sticking out of Annie’s desk. When she opened it, the card fell out.” Dylan looked around the hallway, making sure nobody could hear us.
“K.W.L.B.?” I asked.
“Yeah. That’s the third one this week.”
The mysterious white cards with green letters were driving us nuts. Even Olivia, the smartest girl in our class, didn’t know what they were. She came up behind us.
“Annie slipped the card into her backpack,” said Dylan. “She walks home with Robert and Grace. We could follow them.”
“Good idea!” said Olivia. “Robert and Grace have white cards too.”
We agreed to follow at a distance as soon as school was out.
It made me nervous to think of following them. What if they saw us? Robert was a big kid and I didn’t want to make him angry. When the last bell rang, I met Dylan and Olivia on the sidewalk.
“We can’t let them know we’re following them,” said Dylan.
“Right,” said Olivia, “talk and laugh a lot, like we don’t even see them.”
But we hung back too far and lost them at the corner.
“Hey! Where’d they go?” cried Dylan.
“One of them dropped a card,” I said.
